My Favourite Reads of 2021 (No spoilers!)

At this time last year, I wrote a resolution to make 2021 a year of reading and writing. I wanted to flip the page and start a new chapter of my life, one devoted to what actually fills me up and makes me happy. My initial goal was to read…

New Year’s traditions in Bulgaria

Last week, I published a little piece where I talked about the quirky traditions that Bulgarians follow on Christmas Eve. Here, I continue with inside information about the next big festive occasion — New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve is pretty huge in Bulgaria. The holiday is perceived as the…

Another fiction piece from me. The winter season really sparks my creativity, so I decided to lean into that. I will be back with more maths writing very soon! But meanwhile I hope you enjoy this little flash fiction piece. …

A little glimpse of fiction: An Ode to Earth

Most of my posts so far have been focused on my mathematical writing. So I decided to offer a little glimpse into the world I create in my fiction writing practice. I love nature and am passionate about the future of our planet. My article “The curse of the digital…

Finite Groups: What are They, Can We Classify Them and What is Their Geometric Purpose?

What are groups? A large topic in higher abstract algebra is group theory. As the name suggests, this is the study of groups. Groups are abstractly defined structures. Intuitively speaking, they consist of a collection of elements connected by an operation that one can think of as either addition or multiplication. The elements…

What Multiplication Can Do: Monoidal Categories and Mathematical Braids

A category is an abstract mathematical structure that has objects and morphisms. The objects are the basic building blocks, the “ingredients” if you wish, and the morphisms are a way we can “get” from one object to another, they pave a path for us to move between the basic ingredients…

Why do we struggle sustaining “good” habits?

In “Atomic Habits” James Clear analyses the structure of habits, what makes and breaks them, shedding light on why we fail to build positive ones. Habits are outcome-based — defined by what we want to achieve, or identity-based — built on who we want to be. An outcome-based habit is “I want to write short stories”, whereas an identity-based one is “I want to be a writer”. Motivating yourself by a result is less impactful than concentrating on why it matters. Shifting the perspective gives the change deeper meaning, thus adding an extra incentive to follow through.

What are 2-Categories?

In my article “What is category theory and why is it trendy?” I explored the basic idea behind the definition of categories, thus giving the fundamental “why” behind the existence of the area of mathematics called category theory. Recall that categories consist of a collection of objects and maps between…

Why you should write.

“The best writing you can do is the writing you can’t NOT do. You have to tell the story that is bursting to be told.”
